Most calls we take fall into a handful of patterns. Here is what usually causes them.
The door will not open at all
Start with the simple checks: is the opener getting power, and is the emergency release cord hanging loose. If the door is dead in both powered and manual modes, the counterbalance is the suspect and the door should be left alone until a technician looks at it.
There was a loud bang from the garage
That sound is a torsion spring breaking almost every time. The door will feel enormously heavy afterward and the opener may struggle or refuse to lift it. Do not run the opener again, it can burn out the motor or bend the top section.
The door reverses on its way down
The safety sensors mounted a few inches off the floor are being blocked or are out of line with each other. Clear anything in the beam, wipe the lenses, then check that both indicator lights are steady rather than blinking.
The opener hums but nothing moves
Power is reaching the motor and the drive is not transferring it. A stripped nylon drive gear inside the opener head is the usual answer on chain and belt units. A broken spring produces the same symptom for a different reason.
The door is crooked or off its track
One side has come out of the horizontal or vertical track, often after a cable snapped or a car nudged the door. Stop using the opener immediately. Forcing a crooked door bends track and damages hinges and sections.
The remote stopped working
Try a fresh battery first, then test the wall button. If the wall button works and the remote does not, the remote needs re-pairing to the logic board. If nothing works, the receiver or the board itself is the issue.
The door slams shut instead of closing gently
A slamming door is a counterbalance problem, not a speed setting. Broken or badly weakened springs, or a snapped cable on one side, let gravity take over. This one is genuinely dangerous and should be looked at the same day.
There is a gap at the bottom when the door is closed
Usually a hardened or torn bottom astragal seal, but it can also mean the door is out of level or a cable has slipped on one drum. Water and leaves getting in during a Tennessee downpour is the practical cost of ignoring it.
The door will not close in bright sunlight
Late-day sun hitting the receiving safety sensor washes out the beam and the opener reads it as an obstruction. Shading the sensor or repositioning the pair fixes it, and it is one of the more common summer service calls we get.
The chain is slapping or the door rattles
A loose chain, worn steel rollers, or hinge and bracket bolts that have vibrated free. All three are normal wear on a door that has been in service for years and all three are handled in a standard tune-up.

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
Look for a visible gap in the coil above the door, a door that lifts a few inches then stops, or a door that feels like it weighs two hundred pounds by hand. A loud bang from the garage with no other damage is almost always a spring letting go.

My opener hums but the door does not move. What is wrong?
The motor is running and something between the motor and the door is not transferring the force. On chain and belt units that is usually a stripped plastic drive gear. It can also be a broken spring, which leaves the door too heavy for the motor to lift.
Why does my door reverse right before it closes?
Nine times out of ten it is the safety sensors near the floor being knocked out of alignment or blocked by a bin, a bike or a spider web. If the sensor lights are steady and clean, the close-force setting or the travel limit needs adjustment.
